4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Generations

There would have been no more than two Dunkerley families in the early 17th Century, that of John who was baptised in 1565, and James, for whom there is no baptismal record, but who was almost certainly John's brother. Daniel could have been the son of James' son John and his wife Alice. Or he could have been the son of John's presumed brother James and his wife Marie. Or he could have been the son of Moses by an even earlier marriage than Ann Greaves. This has been my favoured option up to now as there appeared to be an affinity between Daniel and other members of Moses' family. Martha (bap. 1639) called her bastard son Daniel (bap. 1655). Luke, (bap. 1654/55) Moses' youngest son, and John (bap. 1653), Daniel's eldest son, both lived with their families at Horsedge, near Oldham.

I am supposing that Daniel was born around 1630, when there were just three breeding Dunkerley families in Oldham. I am therefore taking the unusual step of adding him to all three family trees in the hope that eventually positive evidence will be found.

Daniel Dunkerley was named in the 1664 Hearth Tax records, but he did not pay tax. He may have been the Daniel Dunkerley who was buried on 4th August 1680.

However he could have been receiving poor relief. The records of St. Mary's Overseers of the Poor that I have seen commence in 1681. There were two poor leys in the course of a year, normally in May and November. First were written the names of those who contributed, with the amount that they paid, occasionally the name of the property was written, they could be an owner or occupant. No Dunkerleys were recorded on the list of contributors until 1722, except for a couple of entries for Luke Dunkerley for 1s 2d and 1s in 1697 and 1698 respectively. At the end of the list were written the names of the impotent poor who received a weekly allowance. In 1681 and 1682 two Dunkerleys were on this list, Dan Dunkerley's unnamed daughter received 7d (pence) and Martha Dunkerley received 10d. In 1682 Daniel Dunkerley received his half-yearly house rent of 4s 6d, this continued until June 1684 when Martha Dunkerley died. The two Dunkerley names came very close together in the lists, suggesting that they lived near one another, reinforcing the idea that they were brother and sister. From 1688 Daniel was receiving 4d weekly, as well as his house rent, he was probably approaching sixty at this time. He dropped out of the Oldham Poor Ley after 1693 but there is no record of his burial in St. Mary's parish registers. (It might be worth looking at the burial register for Shaw Chapel in case he was buried there).

P_John Dunkerley
This John was probably born during the period of patchy records between 1670 and 1680. It is only possible to presume that he was the eldest son of John and Susan. The fact that he lived at Broadbent and Hopkinfold, which is nearby, suggests that he was brother to Mathew and James, both of Broadbent. I think that he may have had one more child, a daughter, Sara, bap. 3.11.1722 at Pittbank, the mother mistakenly recorded as Mary. It is only possible to presume that the three boys, John, Daniel and Enoch, belonged to this family as the mother's name was not given in the baptismal registers. The only clue is the abode, Hopkinfold. Daniel and John were both buried from Fowleach, as was their mother Anne. There is no record of a burial for John himself unless he was the Old John Dunkerley who was buried from Mumps in 1773. He would have been over 90, but this is not impossible and Mumps was where his son Joseph lived.

Joseph Dunkerley
Joseph prospered. Local historian Edward Butterworth (Historical Sketches of Oldham), wrote that by 1757 Joseph had become one of the principal ratepayers in Oldham. His Will, signed 30th August 1788, was valued at upwards of £1,000. Beneficiaries were his wife Mary, after her death sons William, Enoch, Luke. Daughters sarah Cheetham, Mally Kay, three grandsons, sons of his dead son John - James, John and Joseph, grandosn Enoch D. Jnr.
