Chart 4: John Dunkerley 1598-1638

3rd & 4th Generations

John Dunkerley is the best documented member of the family in this period; we know when he was born, married and died. He and his wife were buried in the same month and his father, James, less than two weeks later - he may have lived with them.

John Dunkerley married Alice Hopwood in 1622. She may have been a member of the Hopwood family whose records are deposited in Lancashire Record Office (see www.a2a.org.uk). In these records - DDHP - John Dunkerley was mentioned, with others, in an attornment(?) dated 2/3/1636. The late John Dunkerley was also mentioned in a lease to William Crompton of Oldham, of a cottage "late in the tenure of John Dunkerley, decd, Father of Martha, Wife of W.C". Both John and his wife, Alice, died in 1638; they were not listed in the Poll Tax of 1641. Although Martha Dunkerley is not listed in St. Mary's Baptismal Register, this makes it fairly clear that she was one of John's children. An assignment of a cottage, presumably the same one, dated 25.1.1647/48, also in DDHP, "William Crompton of Ouldham to John Dunkerley of the Hollens tailor". This suggests that this younger John Dunkerley was Martha's brother, and therefore another presumed son of John and Alice.

I have also assigned Daniel Dunkerley to John as a presumed son. It is impossible at present to determine his parentage. Daniel was probably born between 1625 and 1630, not earlier or he would have appeared in the Poll Tax of 1641. If he was indeed the son of John and Alice, he would have been very young when he they died in 1638 and may have been taken into Moses' family, which might explain his apparent affinity with them.
