The only information that we have for John Dunkerley is that he appeared in the Muster Roll for 1569 (Source: Dr. Peter Rathbone). His name does not appear in Oldham Baptismal Registers as the father of John Dunkerley bap. 1565 or Mary Dunkerley bap. 1567 or James Dunkerley, whose presumed baptism must have occurred around this time. However they are the only known Dunkerleys in Oldham at this early period, so it seems reasonable to surmise that they were related. Philip Dunkerley, who has been researching the Dunkerley name, has noted a number of Dunkerleys in Manchester in this period, so they may have migrated from there. Oldham Dunkerleys kept to the same christian names; John was usually the first boy, followed by James. Mathew, Mark, Luke were also common, occasionally Daniel and Enoch. The first girl was nearly always called Mary. Martha, Sara, Dinah and Ann were all used.
