In the course of researching my family history I have followed various family lines, most of which originate in the North West of England, namely LANCASHIRE & WESTMORLAND. My father, NORMAN DUNKERLEY, was actually born in Saddleworth, but like his forebears he was brought up in OLDHAM. His father, DANIEL, was a tinsmith, who married a parson's daughter, KATE ISABEL HOLME. Her family were yeoman farmers, who, since at least the 17th Century, lived in ORTON & TEBAY, WESTMORLAND. I found the families with whom they intermarried most interesting, particularly the GARNET family, the WARD family, the FOTHERGILL family and the METCALFE family. I have written articles about all these families.

My mother's name was HANNAH THOMPSON. She was born in BURNLEY, although her mother's family, the HAUGHTONS, came from CHESHIRE. EDWARD THOMPSON, her father, told lies in order to distance himself from his family background. It has taken a long time to unravel these lies, and the reason for them. It was known that Edward was of Irish extraction, his mother, ELLEN OR ELEANOR MULLIN, was born in CO. MAYO. She spent most of her life in BLACKBURN, where Edward was born. Her husband, who was also called EDWARD THOMPSON was born in Co Longford. His known CRIMINAL RECORD began in 1864. He had at least 17 convictions ranging from a few weeks imprisonment to two sentences of 7 years. I have not yet decided whether I shall follow this family to Ireland. Thompson is a very common name and it seemed to be a family trait to be casual concerning the truth.

A major part of this website shows the results of my research, using early parish and other records, into the relationships of the earliest known members of the DUNKERLEY family, who are likely to be the ancestors of all living Dunkerleys.

I have recently added more information about my branch of the Dunkerley family, following James and Mathew's move to Cleggs in the early 18th Century.
This can be found in The Dunkerley Area.

As additional information comes to hand I hope to be able to update and clarify the information, and would welcome contributions from Visitors.

There has now been added some substantial material concerning ROBERT WESTON AND THE GORST FAMILY OF LIVERPOOL which can be found at the end of the Metcalfe area, to whom the Gorsts are related.
An article about the Westmorland artist JAMES WARD has recently been added, together with examples of some of his work, and pictures of some of the people and places associated with him.
It is hoped that more photographs will gradually be added, particularly to the Dunkerley, Metcalfe and Holme sections.
19.12.2010 A substantial account of The Brown Family of Southend Kintyre Scotland has been added. Other family names for this area which have been researched include McKay, McDonald, Reid, Clark Pickan and later, Whiteford. Look in the Brown Area.
